How do I connect?
To connect you need an IRC client. There are both free clients, and those you have to pay for. We do not recommend any client in particular, it's up to you to find one that covers you needs. When you have one, you must point it to the address irc.kottnet.net. If you want to connect using SSL, you must change the port to 6670 or 6697. Once connected, type /join #channel to enter a channel.
How do I register my nickname?
Make sure you include a valid email address. Although we don't require verification via email, it's necessary to have one in case you forget your password.
/msg NickServ REGISTER password email
When you've done that, go to your client's settings and set the "password for server" to your NickServ password, or, if your client supports SASL, your NickServ username (the nickname you used to register your account) and password in the text fields. By doing that, you'll be signed in to NickServ every time you connect. If you want to manually log in in the future, use:
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY password
How do I register a channel?
To register a new channel, it must not already be registered, and you must have op status (+o), often represented with a @ (at sign) in front of your nickname, in it. Also make sure you are logged in to NickServ (/msg NickServ IDENTIFY password). When you meet all of the criteria, use the following command to register a channel:
/msg ChanServ REGISTER #channel
You cannot register local (&) channels.
ChanServ is in my channel - how do I remove him?
ChanServ is there to make sure the channel won't get empty. If everyone leaves the channel and ChanServ isn't there, all bans and modes will get lost. That is why ChanServ joins new channels when they get registered. To manually make it part, type:
/msg ChanServ SET #channel GUARD off
How can I hide my IP/hostname?
You have two options for hiding your nick, of which one is a virtual host (vhost).
We have a few rules for requesting vhosts. Firstly, it may not be used to offend, troll or annoy other people in any way. Secondly, you're not allowed to request existing domains or subdomains of domains that exist, unless you prove you own it. Thirdly, do not abuse requesting vhosts to evade bans and/or impersonate other people. To request a vhost, enter the following command:
/msg HostServ REQUEST this.is.my.vhost
Another option to hide your nick is by requesting a cloak. A cloak looks is formatted like channel/group/nickname, for example kottnet/user/Chatter. You can request one in #help, if the channel you use has more than 15 users, is at least 3 days old and hasn't got a name that could offend others. Cloaks and vhosts cannot contain the word 'staff'.
